Football Records Second Shutout Of Season In Win At Kalamazoo

The Hope College football team posted its second shutout of the season with 50-0 win at Kalamazoo College on Saturday.

It is the first time since the 1985 season that the Flying Dutchmen blanked multiple opponents in the same season.

Hope improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play after outgaining the winless Hornets 593 to 105 in the annual Wooden Shoes trophy game.

Senior running back Brandan Campbell of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego HS) rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns to move into sixth place all-time for rushing yards with the Flying Dutchmen.

With 2,372 yards, Campbell passed Greg Voss (2,357 yards from 1970-71) and Todd Holstege (2,251 from 1979-82).

Campbell scored on runs of 16 and 52 yards — giving him 11 rushing touchdowns this season and 25 in his Hope career.

Six different players recorded touchdowns: receiver Christian Bos of Hudsonville, Michigan (Unity Christian) on a 12-yard run, quarterback Mason Opple of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) on a 2-yard run, running back Chris Leigh of Lake Orion, Michigan (Lake Orion) on a 32-yard run, receiver Korey Derr of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Northview) on a 29-yard pass from quarterback Austin Heeres of Wyoming, Michigan (Grandville Calvin Christian), and receiver Ryan Veenstra of Grand Rapids, Michigan (South Christian) on an 8-yard pass from Heeres.

Receiver Kurtis Slenk of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) made six receptions for a game-high 133 yards receiving. It was his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game.

Defensive end Zach Telfor of Charlotte, Michigan (Charlotte) led the Flying Dutchmen with 11 tackles. He also had one sack of their four sacks and recovered a fumble.

Linebacker Griffin Weigl of Saginaw, Michigan (Nouvel Catholic Central) collected nine tackles and two sacks.

Defensive lineman Tate Knapp of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton) had seven tackles and one sack.

The Flying Dutchmen forced three turnovers while allowing only four yards rushing and five yards passing.
