Men's Tennis Falls To Calvin 5-4 In MIAA Tournament Semifinals

The Hope College men's tennis team made a valiant comeback in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament semifinals before falling to visiting Calvin 5-4 on Thursday.

The second-seeded Flying Dutchmen won the first four singles matches to take a brief lead, but the third-seeded Knights claimed the final two decisive points with three-set victories and advanced to Friday's championship match at top-seeded Kalamazoo.

Hope ends the season with a 9-10 overall record.

The Flying Dutchmen charged back from a 3-0 deficit after doubles play.

Sophomore Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) started the rally with a 6-2, 6-2 against Taylor Asfour at No. 3 singles.

Freshman Danny Kroeze of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Matt VanWinkle at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Andrew Klein of Augusta, Michigan (Kalamazoo Christian) then topped Anthony Vroon at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomore Christian Rhoades of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) put Hope ahead 4-3 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Calvin (16-5) avenged a 6-3 regular-season loss to the Knights with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 win from Jason Wolters at No. 6 singles against sophomore Justin Folkert of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton) and a 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 win from Rodrigo C.V. Guzman at No. 1 singles against sophomore Michael Kiley of Muskegon, Michigan (Mona Shores).
