Tied up at a set apiece by a determined host, the Hope College volleyball team answered as quickly and as forcibly as possible.

The 21st-ranked Flying Dutch opened the third set with seven consecutive points and never looked back, charging to a 27-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17 win at Trine on Wednesday.

Hope improved to 3-2 overall after emerging victorious in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener. Trine fell to 3-2.

After Trine pulled even, the Flying Dutch used points from four different players to take a commanding early lead in the fourth set.

A kill from senior Paige Baker of Encinitas, California (La Costa Canyon HS). A Trine attack error. A service ace from senior Mallory Luke of Saline, Michigan (Saline). Back-to-back kills from senior Haley Muller of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian). A kill from senior Sophie Hackett of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep). Another kill from Muller.

Swiftly, Hope led 7-0 and reclaimed momentum. The Flying Dutch then ended the set with 11 of the final 14 points for the match lead.

Hope jumped to 10-4 lead in the fourth set and closed out the match.

Muller collected a match-high 18 kills for the Flying Dutch.

Junior Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) totaled 13 kills. Baker added 12 at a .365 kill percentage.

Hackett finished with 37 assists and 19 digs. Luke, pictured, served six aces.

The Flying Dutch were playing their fifth consecutive match away from home to start the season. Their home opener is Friday, September 8 at 6:30 p.m. against Olivet at DeVos Fieldhouse.
