Box Score The Hope College men's soccer team was looking for a lucky break, and Cameron Hoober was happy to capitalize.
The freshman forward scored off a rebound early in the second half, and the Flying Dutchmen went on to a 5-0 win vs Olivet College on Saturday afternoon at Olivet College.
Hope received second-half goals from four different players.
It is the biggest offensive output of the season for the Flying Dutchmen, which improved to 3-0-1 in the MIAA and 9-2-2 overall. Olivet fell to 1-3-0 in the MIAA and 3-9-0 overall.
The Flying Dutchmen were held scoreless in the first half. Just 38 seconds into the second half, Hope drilled a shot off the crossbar that caromed right to Hoober, pictured, who put the ball in the back of the net.
Then the floodgates opened up.
Hoober (Lancaster, Pennsylvania / Lancaster Mennonite HS) also scored in the 52nd minute off an assist from Ryan Flynn (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington). He now has three goals on the season.
In the 65th minute, Nic Kubert (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Avondale HS) scored off a pass from Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Ill. / Loyola Academy) for his fourth goal of the season.
Four minutes later, Kai Jurgle (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Skyline) scored his first goal of the season. And with just seven seconds left in the game, Thomas DeVries (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian HS) scored his second goal of the season off a corner kick.
Hope College recorded 27 shots and had 14 shots on goal. Olivet didn't have a shot on goal.
Goalkeepers Daniel Hesselbein and Keegan DeKuiper combined for the shutout. Hesselbein (Barrington, Ill. / Barrington Community HS) played the first 73 minutes in net before DeKuiper took over. It was the first career game for DeKuiper, a freshman from Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores).
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Alma College for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
