Ryan Flynn scored the first goal of the game barely before Hope College fans had a chance to find their seats.

Flynn scored twice — including the first goal 58 seconds into the game - as the Flying Dutchmen beat Olivet College 3-0 on Saturday night in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

Coming off a scoreless tie at Kalamazoo College in Wednesday's regular-season finale, third-seeded Hope focused on its offensive attack leading into postseason play, head coach Dave Brandt said.

"I think we made some adjustments system-wise, hoping to get behind the defense a little more," Brandt said. "I think that showed immediate dividends."

Hope improved to 11-3-3 and advanced to play at second-seeded Kalamazoo on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. semifinal contest. Olivet ended its season at 4-11-1.

Hope scored its first goal after Jackson Strabel booted a long ball into the goal box. The ball deflected off a defender to the feet of Flynn, who settled the ball and ripped it into the net.

It is the third assist of the season for Strabel, a junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood).

Flynn's second goal was a little different. He dribbled into the box, deked a defender, and ripped a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner of the net.

Junior Nic Kubert (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Avondale) made it 3-0 at the 9-minute mark of the first half. The goalkeeper came out of the net to play the ball, but Kubert deked him and hit a soft shot through the legs of a defender and into the back of the net.

It is the sixth goal of the season for the midfielder.

Joey Weber got the start in net for the first time in his four-year career at Hope. The senior from Buckley, Mich. (Buckley Community HS), made two saves in the first half.

With the team leading 3-0 at halftime, Austin Cortes played in the second half. It was just the second game of the season for the senior from Gurnee, Illinois (Warren Township). He made one save in 45 minutes of play.
