Box Score The Hope College women's soccer team lost is first MIAA game of the season and just its third overall as the Flying Dutch were downed by rival Calvin University on Wednesday, 2-1, at Zuidema in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Hope is now 1-1 in league play and 7-3 in total. Calvin upped its record to 3-0 in the MIAA and 9-2 overall.
While the Knights scored one goal in each half (in the 26th and 51st minutes), the Flying Dutch got their lone goal late in the game when freshman forward Margaret Owsiany (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central), pictured, scored an unassisted goal in the 86th minute. It was Owsiany's third goal of the season.
The Flying Dutch exerted early offensive pressure against the Knights, taking four of their nine shots in the first 23 minutes of the game. Hope had an unfolding chance to take the early lead in the 24th minute when senior forward Sarah Mikesell (Norton Shores, Michigan/Mona Shores) had a mini-breakaway, but Calvin goalie Sarah Hoekwater deflected the shot headed toward the left corner of the net.
The Flying Dutch had five shots on goal to the Knights' 10. Sophomore forward Madison Holloway (Macatawa, Michigan/Holland Christian) led Hope with the most shots on goal with two.
Sophomore goalie Parker Hutchinson (Ada, Michigan/Forest Hills Northern) made seven saves for the Flying Dutch.
Hope hosts Trine University (11-0-1, 2-0) on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Game time is 12 p.m.
