Tyler Stafford, pictured right, put two victories on the board for the Hope College men's tennis team on Saturday versus North Central (Illinois) College. The sophomore from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS) earned wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 singles, but the Flying Dutchmen came up short as a team against the Cardinals, 6-3, at the DeWitt Tennis Center on Saturday.
With partner sophomore Paul Washington of Dearborn (Dearborn HS), Stafford downed North Central's Morgan Red and Justin Howes, 8-4. Stafford then went on to win his singles match in comeback fashion over Howes, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Also victorious for the Flying Dutchmen on Saturday was sophomore Jacob Burkett of Clarkston (Clarkston HS) at No. 1 singles. Burkett decisively downed Guillermo Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1.
Hope won two singles matches and one doubles match against North Central.
Hope now has a 0-3 overall record while North Central is 2-0.
The Flying Dutchmen next play Kalamazoo College in a non-conference match on Friday, February 26 at the DeWitt Tennis Center. Match time is 4 p.m.
