Hope College's Sarah Mikesell did everything she could to be a nightmare for Adrian College goalkeeper Kristen Page.
The junior from Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores HS) had a stunning nine shots on goal and one goal, but the Flying Dutch settled for a 1-1 tie at Adrian in double overtime on Tuesday.
Hope and Adrian are now 1-1-1 overall and in MIAA play. The two teams topped the 2021 MIAA preseason coaches poll.
Mikesell, pictured, scored with 29:11 left in regulation, cutting to the net and receiving a nice through-ball from senior Audrey White (Hudsonville, Michigan /Hudsonville) before booting it past Page.
It was Mikesell's first goal of the season and eighth of her career.
For White, it was her second career assist.
A minute into the second half, Mikesell drilled a shot from 30-yards out that bent from right to left and just hit the crossbar and caromed out of bounds. At the 37 minute mark, Mikesell took a great feed to the center of the goalie box, but her point-blank shot was saved by Page.
The Flying Dutch outshot Adrian, 33-6, in the match, including 19-3 in shots on goal.
Page made a school-record 18 saves.
Hope goalkeeper Jordanne Ellingboe barely touched the ball all game, but the senior from Grand Haven, Mich. (Grand Haven HS) made a nice save with 50 seconds left in the first overtime.
And again, Ellingboe made a game-winning save on a point-blank shot with 6:30 left in double overtime.
Hope returns home on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest against Alma College.
