Men's Soccer Tops Olivet on Emotional Purple Community Day

On an emotional day, the Hope College men's soccer team brought a few smiles to some special people in their lives.

The Flying Dutchmen won their Purple Community Game on Saturday, defeating Olivet College, 3-0, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium behind a balanced attack with three different goal scorers.

The Purple Community Game raised money and awareness for Van Andel Institute's biomedical research and science education and helped underwrite an internship for a Hope student at Van Andel Institute.

The Flying Dutchmen improved to 5-3-5 overall and maintained sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings with a 3-1 league record.

"It means a lot, and it really does for us," head coach David Blahnik said of the Purple Community Game. "We have a current player, Cole Pauly, whose mom is battling Stage 4 cancer. We have a current player whose dad passed from cancer. It's good to be reminded there are more important things than soccer, but it's awesome we can use the game we love to raise awareness and funds for a cause that is directly impacting guys on our field."

Pauly scored the final goal for the Flying Dutchmen in the 83rd minute. The freshman defender from Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein HS) blasted a shot from 30 yards out that glanced off the crossbar and down past the goal line.

It was Pauly's first goal of the season.

Eight minutes earlier, Hope broke open the game when sophomore midfielder Thomas De Vries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) drew a penalty near the Olivet goal and turned a penalty kick into his second goal of the season.

The Flying Dutchmen held to a tenuous 1-0 lead for 32 minutes after freshman Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) put a rebound into the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Olivet keeper Carlos Santos kept the Comets in the game with seven saves. Hope outshot the Olivet by a 28-4 margin. The Comets dropped to 3-7-3 overall and 0-2-2 in MIAA play.

"If you give Olivet a chance to organize defensively, they're tough to break down. They did a good job of that, which frustrated our guys at times," Blahnik said. "Our guys kept going, going and going. What I really like about this team is that we had multiple goal scorers today, which is what we really need for our team to be successful. I like there was some parity in our scoring."

Hope's next game is on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. at third-place Trine University.
