The Hope College volleyball team bounced back into the winning ways after game one of the Midwest Invitational on Friday, going 2-0 in Saturday's matchups against North Central (Ill.) and Millikin.Â
Offensively, sophomore Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / Willliam Mason HS) led all players with 22 kills in the 3-1 win over North Central (Ill.), which marks her sixth consecutive match with kills in double figures. Sophomore Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) hit at a .538 attack percentage with just one attacking error in the first game of the day.
Hope clinched the first two sets with 25-10 and 25-12 scores before North Central made it 2-1 with a 27-25 win. The Flying Dutch then took home the win by defeating the Cardinals 25-19.Â
Hope was led defensively by senior Emma Post (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville), who recorded 13 digs, while sophomore Grace Marshall (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) and junior Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) each posted 12 digs.
DeWeerd and Lockett had three and two blocks, respectively, in the first four set win.Â
Freshman Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline)Â led the team in assists with 49.Â
The win over Millikin (25-16, 25-22, 25-21)Â marked the Flying Dutch's eleventh sweep of the season, and were led by Lockett with 12 kills. DeWeerd and senior Charlotte Brecht (Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) chipped in 8 and 7 kills a piece to finish out the three-game weekend.Â
With the win, Hope is now 18-5 overall this season.Â
In blocks and service aces, DeWeerd led the charge grabbing a game-high five blocks as well as a game-high two aces.Â
Lee put up 31 assists in the sweep, and Marshall topped the digs category with a team-high 13. Post and Fiebing each chipped in 11 digs.Â
The Flying Dutch return to DeVos Fieldhouse on Tuesday, October 18 when they host MIAA opponent Alma College at 6:30 p.m.
