Women's Soccer Rolls Past Saint Mary's in Regular-Season Finale

The Flying Dutch win, 5-0, on Wednesday.

Freshman Hayley Flynn and the Hope College women's soccer team did not mess around against Saint Mary's College on Wednesday night.

Fueled by Flynn's record-tying three assists, the Flying Dutch charged to a 5-0 victory at home in the regular-season finale and clinched sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings.

Hope (9-4-2, 5-2-1 MIAA) will host a MIAA Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday, Oct. 29, at noon at Van Andel Soccer Stadium against Kalamazoo College. Tickets must be purchased through the MIAA website.

The game marked Hope's fourth this season with five or more goals and the Flying Dutch's sixth shutout of an opponent.

"Saint Mary's came out really strong," head coach Leigh Sears said. "Our first unit I think wore them down a little bit. We came in with that second group, and they took over."

Flynn, who subbed in during the 26th minute, went on to tie Grace Bubin's 2018 Hope record for assists in a game at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The midfielder from Petoskey, Michigan (Petoskey) set up both goals that propelled the Flying Dutch to a 2-0 lead.

Flynn's shot in the 37th minute caromed off Saint Mary's goalkeeper Riley Lindsey and at the feet of freshman Madelyn St. John (Marshall, Michigan / Marshall). St. John buried the ball into the right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Seven minutes later, Flynn set up freshman Lauren Ellinger (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) for her first collegiate goal.

After halftime, junior Natalie Hammer (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) struck twice in a span of 116 seconds early in the second half to break the game open.

Hammer scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from freshman Olivia Dieppa (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and in the 55th minute off an assist from freshman Liz Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston).

Hammer leads the Flying Dutch this season with a career-high seven goals.

Flynn recorded her final assist against Saint Mary's (0-13-3) in the 64th minute after setting up St. John again.

Sears said Flynn has taken advantage of a switch in positions.

"I think she's way more dynamic on the outside. She has great speed," Sears said. "I think we found a new home for her. She moves really well with the ball."
