Volleyball Tallies A Senior Night Sweep Over Olivet

The Flying Dutch rebounded back to winning ways as they downed Olivet College in three sets on Wednesday night for a senior night sweep.

"Our seniors were fantastic. On a night that honors them it was exciting to see them be so successful," said head coach Becky Schmidt

In dominating fashion tallying 25-12, 25-20 and 25-8 set wins, the Hope College volleyball team improved to 20-6 overall.

The Orange and Blue finished the win with a season-high .370 hitting percentage as a team at DeVos Fieldhouse.

"I thought our passers put Lauren Lee in a position where she could use all of our hitters and that's always what we're striving for," said Schmidt. "The mentality of our team tonight was really, really good, we kept our foot on the gas, we played really assertive volleyball."

With a single game left in the regular season, Hope sits in second place in the MIAA with a 6-1 record.

Sophomore Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason HS) led the attack with 13 kills on the night, while senior Jenna Core (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) sent out eight kills, and senior Charlotte Brecht (Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) and sophomore Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) each had seven kills in the sweep.

Sophomore Grace Marshall (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) led things defensively with 16 digs to assist in keeping Olivet off the board. Core tallied 10 digs to help Hope with multiple large point spreads, including 13-point leads and at one time a 17-point lead.

Lockett fired off a season-high seven service aces against Olivet.

Freshman setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) contributed 40 assists while Brecht and Lockett picked up four and six block-assists in the final home court matchup.

The Flying Dutch are set to take on Adrian College in the regular season finale on the road on Saturday, October 29 at 1 pm.
