Men's Basketball Loses to Third-Ranked Wisconsin Oshkosh

The Hope College men's basketball team fell to third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 67-56, on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Titans earned the non-league victory by outsourcing the Flying Dutchmen, 32-22, during the second half.

Head coach Greg Mitchell said his team will grow from facing Oshkosh, which was determined to bounce back after a 59-56 loss at Calvin University on Friday.

"They're ranked No. 3 for a reason. I know they didn't play well last night. They were on edge," Mitchell said. "Full credit to them. That's a great basketball team, one of the best coached teams in the country. They're so good for us to play that game. If we're going to be the team we want to be, that's a team we've got to beat in March."

Senior guard Evan Thomas topped the Flying Dutchmen with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) chipped in 14 points.

Sophomore center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) added 10 points.

Hope battled Oshkosh early, trailing 35-34 at halftime.

The Titans' Hunter Plamann and Hunter Reichert buried 3s to open the second half, building a lead that never sank below five points the remainder of the game.

Oshkosh (2-1) limited the Flying Dutchmen to 27.3 percent field-goal shooting during the second half. Hope committed 10 of its 17 turnovers after halftime.

Led by Borchert's team-high 17 points, the Titans outscored the Flying Dutchmen, 40-16, in the paint and committed only seven turnovers during the entire game.

"I thought the first half was a high level first half," Mitchell said. "We kept fighting back. We didn't punch back in the second half. We just didn't take care of the ball well enough. Down 10 in the turnover department, that's the difference."

Hope's next game is Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. It is the Flying Dutchmen's third consecutive game against an opponent from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to start the season.
