Volleyball Drops MIAA Tournament Semifinal to Albion

The 16th-ranked Hope College volleyball team fell in the MIAA Tournament semifinals to No. 24-ranked Albion College in three sets on Friday at Calvin University.

The Flying Dutch (21-7 overall) will find out on Monday, Nov. 7, if they receive an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III Championships. The 64-team field will be announced at 1 p.m. on ncaa.com.

Hope entered the week fifth in Region VIII. There are 20 at-large berths.

Albion (25-5) advanced to the MIAA Tournament final on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at Calvin. The Britons are the first team to beat Hope in an MIAA Tournament semifinal since Alma College in 2004.

Albion, which was unranked in the latest region poll, will face either top-seeded Calvin or fourth-seeded Adrian College.

The Flying Dutch threatened to even the match at one set apiece after three kills from sophomore middle blocker Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) fueled a four-point run that tied the set score at 20-20.

Albion, however, answered with the next five points, including three on service aces, to take the second set. The Britons then scored the first three points of the third set and never trailed.

Albion outhit Hope, .299 to .112.

Sophomore outside hitter Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason HS) totaled 11 kills to lead the Flying Dutch.

DeWeerd and senior outside hitter Emma Post (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) collected seven kills apiece.

Freshman setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) finished with 30 assists.

Chloe Webber topped Albion with 16 kills.

Earlier in the day, Lee and Lockett were announced as All-MIAA First Team selections along with second-team honorees: DeWeerd and senior middle blocker Charlotte Brecht (Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South).

Lee was also chosen as MIAA Freshman of the Year.
