Volleyball Powers Past Denison in MIAA/NCAC Crossover Opener

Box Score Alison DeWeerd and Annie Lockett proved to be on the attack for the Hope College volleyball team.

Charlotte Brecht and Jenna Core were as well.

The four hitters combined for 52 kills to power the sixth-ranked Flying Dutch to a 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 25-13 victory against Denison University (Ohio) on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The match was the first for Hope (5-0) in a crossover tournament featuring teams from the MIAA and the North Coast Athletic Conference.

On Saturday, the Flying Dutch face Wittenberg University (Ohio) at 10 a.m. and Ohio Wesleyan University at 2 p.m. at the DeYoung Volleyball Court. Wittenberg defeated Calvin University in four sets on Friday, while Ohio Wesleyan lost to Albion College in five sets.

DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian HS) and Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) shared match-high honors with 16 kills apiece.

Brecht (Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) and Core (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) chipped in 10 kills apiece.

Setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Ann Arbor Skyline) directed the attack with 48 assists.

Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) had 30 digs.
