Volleyball Topped by Two Nationally Ranked Foes

The Hope College volleyball team dropped a pair of showdowns to nationally-ranked opponents on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The ninth-ranked Flying Dutch fell to No. 7 University of Northwestern (Minn.) and No. 11 Otterbein College (Ohio) in three sets apiece during the final day of Hope's two-day tournament.

Against Northwestern, the Flying Dutch lost 28-26, 25-23, 25-19. In the first set, Hope rallied from a 25-21 deficit with five consecutive points before Northwestern held off set points and reeled off the final three points.

Northwestern (11-0) scored the final three points during the second set as well. Abby Glanzer's 15 kills led the Eagles.

Hope received 13 kills from sophomore Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) and 10 kills from senior Emma Post (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville).

Against Otterbein, the Flying Dutch lost 25-23, 25-18, 25-16. The Cardinals (11-2) scored the final three points to take the first set.

Morgan Hartman's 17 kills topped Otterbein.

Lockett led Hope with eight kills. Junior Olivia Fiebing totaled a match-high 16 digs.

The Flying Dutch (8-3) return to action on Tuesday, September 20, at 6:30 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse against unbeaten Albion College (12-0). It is the MIAA opener for both teams.
