Box Score Two semifinal showings by Tyler Stafford and Jonathan Eggleston in the first weekend of Hope College men's tennis helped the orange and blue to pick up 19Â total wins during a home tournament on Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17.Â
Stafford, a senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), went 3-1 in the A flight, with wins against opponents from Trine University, Calvin University, and Aquinas College, before being defeated 6-3 and 6-2 by Santi Castenallos from Cornerstone University in the semifinals.Â
Eggleston, a sophomore from Yuseong Gu, Daejeon, (Taejon Christian Intl School), also posted a 3-1 record in the B flight before being defeated by Luis Azurduy from Cornerstone University, 6-2 and 6-3 in the semifinals.Â
Brendan Evert, a sophomore from Sterling Heights, Michigan (Sterling Heights), went 2-1 at the Vande-Poel Heeringa Courts, making an appearance in the quarterfinals before suffering a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Azurduy, who would continue on to the finals.Â
Six different Flying Dutchmen posted 1-1 records over the two-day tournament in singles play; senior Jacob Burkett (Clarkston, Michigan / Clarkston), junior Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis), senior Cameron Coates (Stevensville, Michigan / Laurel Springs), sophomore Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian), freshman Hunter Napieralski (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea), and freshman Jake Lemming (Indianapolis, Indiana / Heritage Christian).Â
On the doubles side, Burkett and Coates teamed up in flight A to go 1-1, as did the team of Stafford and senior Matt Henkel who also posted a 1-1 record.Â
Becksvoort and Evert made a run to the championship match, where they earned second place and a 3-1 record in the first weekend of Hope College men's tennis.Â
The Flying Dutchmen head to St. Louis, Miss., next for the ITA Central Region Tournament Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24.
