Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Women's Soccer Strikes Twice after Halftime, Downs No. 19 Chicago

Two second-half goals — within a 12-minute span — propelled the Hope College women's soccer team to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory at 19th-ranked University of Chicago on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutch upped their record to 4-1-1 overall after playing a nationally-ranked, non-league opponent for the second consecutive game.

Two freshmen provided the offense Hope needed against Chicago (5-3): Liz Bellinger and Hayley Flynn.

Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston HS) drew the Flying Dutch even at 1-1 by scoring off a free kick just outside the box 15 minutes, 22 seconds into the second half. Chicago (5-3) led since Livia Sabloff scored 6 ½ minutes into the game.

It was Bellinger's second goal of the season and second goal in as many games.

"It was off a restart, and we told her to take it," Sears said of Bellinger. "It was still rising when it hit the back of the net. She hit so hard."

Flynn (Petoskey, Michigan / Petoskey recorded her third goal of the season at 72:39 off an assist from sophomore Bella Nagelkirk (Hudsonville, Michigan / Unity Christian). It was Nagelkirk's first career assist.

"Elisa Melville was in the middle and found Bella wide left," Sears said. "Bella got outside and sent a nice cross. Hayley didn't have to do much, put her foot on it. It was a nice build."

The Flying Dutch kept Chicago off the board the rest of the game. Junior goalkeeper Parker Hutchinson (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) made five saves, including three during the second half.

Hope withstood being outshot by Chicago, 9-7, after halftime, and, 14-10, for the entire game.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. at Capital University (Ohio).
