Men's Golf Excels During Season Opening Tournament

Hope finishes second and third at 36-hole event.

It was a spectacular debut for the Hope College men's golf team.

Led by tournament medalist Liam Casey, the Flying Dutchmen carded 19 rounds in the 70s en route to second- and third-place team finishes at the Spartan Double Gun hosted by Aurora University (Illinois) on Tuesday.

Two Hope teams fired 36-hole rounds of 593 and 594, respectively, to place behind only Aurora's 590 in the 18-team tournament.

One Flying Dutchmen golfer recorded a hole-in-one: sophomore John Barce of Fort Wayne, Indiana (Detroit Catholic Central). Barce aced the 200-yard, fourth hole with a 5-iron during a first-round 85. He shot 80 during the second round.

Casey finished at even-par by carding back-to-back rounds of 72 at Aurora Country Club. The freshman from Northville, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) was one of six Hope golfers to finish in the Top 10 of the 95-golfer field.

Two Hope golfers tied for fifth at 3-over: senior Seth Almquist (Minneapolis, Minnesota / Wayzata) with rounds of 74 and 73 and junior Will Robson (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) with rounds of 70 and 77.

Sophomore Will Webb (Lake Forest, Illinois / Lake Forest) tied for seventh at 4-over with rounds of 77 and 71.

Two Flying Dutchmen finished in a ninth-place tie: sophomore Jack Guerrera (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) with rounds of 74 and 75 and freshman Klay Redman (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Coffman) with rounds of 75 and 74.

Senior Jack Crawford (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) tied for 13th at 6-over with rounds of 76 and 74.

Sophomore Ben Jackson (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Carroll) tied for 25th at 10-over with two rounds of 77.

Junior Logan DeWitt (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) tied for 29th at 12-over (79-77).

Freshman Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) golfed only the second round and fired a 74.
