Men's Basketball's Late Rally Falls Short vs. Albion

The Hope College men's basketball team made a valiant comeback against Albion College before running out of time.

The Britons held on for a 79-78 victory at DeVos Fieldhouse on Saturday, snapping the Flying Dutchmen's four-game winning streak.

Hope (11-8 overall, 5-3 MIAA) remained in sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings. The Flying Dutchmen aim to rebound at Alma College on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

Albion (6-13, 3-5 MIAA) moved up into fifth place.

Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East HS) led three Flying Dutchmen in double figures with a season-high 27 points and four 3-pointers. Dykhouse now has 903 points in his career.

Sophomore center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) collected 16 points, including a 3-pointer at the final buzzer, and a team-best eight rebounds.

Senior forward Evan Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos) added 13 points.

Dykhouse and Quillan combined to go 64 percent from the field (16-25). The Flying Dutchmen struggled as a team, though, shooting 18.75 percent in the first half and 36.6 percent for the game.

Albion used a 13-1 run over the final 4 ½ minutes to extend its lead to 43-24 by halftime. The Britons pushed the lead to 23 points on a Khy Winston 3-pointer 4:42 into the second half.

"The reason we got it back was we were desperate. Why we weren't desperate, why we're not urgent (earlier) is the big question. That's from top to bottom - from the head coach to the 17th player," head coach Greg Mitchell said. "Credit to Albion. They were the aggressors. They were the hammer and we were the nail."

The Britons outscored Hope, 27-18, at the free-throw line — shooting 84.4% in 32 attempts to the Flying Dutchmen's 64.3% in 28 attempts.

Guard Fred Garland's 30 points topped Albion. Guard Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson chipped 15 points. Forward Michael Calhoun added 11 off the bench.
