Men's Basketball Edged in 2OT by Trine in MIAA Opener

The Hope College men's basketball team is familiar with playing overtime against Trine University.

Unfortunately for the Flying Dutchmen, it was the Thunder's turn to earn a hard-fought victory.

No. 25-ranked Trine outlasted Hope, 89-84, in the MIAA opener on Wednesday. The Thunder forced two extra periods with 3-pointers in the closing seconds of regulation and the first five-minute overtime, then outscored the Flying Dutchmen 14-9 during the second overtime period.

It was the fifth overtime game between Hope and Trine in the past 10 years. The Flying Dutchmen won the four previous games that went to overtime.

Senior forward Evan Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos HS) led Hope in scoring with 24 points after returning from injury to play for the first time since November 16.

Junior forward Tanner Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Both totals were one off career-highs.

Senior forward TJ McKenzie Jr. (North Muskegon, Michigan / North Muskegon) also finished with 17 points.

It was Hope's first double-overtime game since the 2021 MIAA Tournament semifinals, when the Flying Dutchmen fell at Albion College, 87-83.

Hope (6-6, 0-1) had several chances to put the game in its win column instead.

The Flying Dutchmen went 9-of-19 from the foul line during the second half of regulation after sinking 17-of-21 during the first half.

At the end of the regulation, Dykhouse split two free-throw attempts with 12 seconds remaining, giving the Flying Dutchmen a 3-point lead. Trine's Grant Pahl buried a corner 3 with four seconds left to even the score at 68-68.

In overtime, Hope went 3-of-7 from the foul line. Dykhouse's split allowed room for Trine's Connor Jones to bury a NBA-length 3-pointer from the top of the key that tied the score at 75-75 with two seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Jones finished with 44 points, the most scored by a Hope opponent this season.

During the second overtime, Trine never trailed after a Jones layup put the Thunder up for good at 79-77 at the 3:18 mark despite a missed opportunity for a three-point play.

Brent Cox and Pahl added 16 and 12 points, respectively, for the Thunder.

Hope's next game is Saturday, January 7, at 3 p.m. at Olivet College.
