Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Alan Babbitt

Third-Ranked Volleyball Tames Trine, Stays Unbeaten in MIAA Play

The third-ranked Hope College volleyball team is looking forward to seeing the court more often.

The Flying Dutch downed Trine University 30-28, 25-8, 25-20 on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse after playing for just the third time in two weeks.

Hope improved to 17-1 overall and a league-leading 5-0 in MIAA matches.

"The biggest thing we're trying to find is our rhythm and what our court demeanor is," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "We just haven't played that much lately. Our bodies are rested. We're just not into game rhythm. We're looking forward to getting back into that."

Outside Addie VanderWeide led a balanced Flying Dutch attack.

The junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished with 12 kills.

Junior middle blocker Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) and outside hitter Liz VanderSlice (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) chipped in nine kills apiece.

Sophomore setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Saline) delivered 36 assists and four service aces.

Hope outlasted the Thunder (8-13, 1-5 MIAA) in the first set by fighting off two set points and capitalizing on two Trine-hitting errors, including the final point.

The first set featured 16 ties and five lead changes.

In the second set, the Flying Dutch never trailed after surging to an 8-0 lead.

"I think our poise was definitely critical," Schmidt said of the first set. "Even a lot of the times we were able to stay within that set was because of a hitting error that they had made. We really didn't feel like we had earned it. The only thing we didn't do was give it away.

"We need to be a lot more efficient. When the game got past the first contact, it was anybody's game. We need to play better defensively. We need to block better. I did think we were creating some offensive opportunities. Lauren did a nice job getting us some different looks that we haven't been doing lately. I think we made some progress there. We've got to find a little more of our mojo."

Hope heads to Calvin University this weekend for a two-day tournament.

On Friday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. the Flying Dutch face Defiance College (Ohio).

On Saturday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, Hope plays Susquehanna University (Pa.) and the University of Santa Cruz (Calif.).
