Margaret Owsiany Leads Women's Soccer's Surge Past the Belles

A second-half, Margaret Owsiany-led surge put the Hope College women's soccer team in the win column to finish the regular season.

The Flying Dutch took down Saint Mary's College on the road 3-0 on Tuesday evening to finish 6-1-1 in league play, and 9-2-5 overall.

"We haven't traveled all that well, and we just knew we had to come out and play with fire," said head coach Leigh Sears

Owsiany, a junior Westerville, Ohio (Westerville Central HS) native, collected her second consecutive multi-goal game, putting in two of Hope's three goals in the win.

"Margaret has just kept working and she's been doing everything we've asked her to do. She's kind of peaking at the right time and she's always found a way to get herself in front of the goal, and now she's finishing."

Owsiany's first goal came in the 66th minute from a shot just outside of the box that banked in with an assist from the left post.

The business major's second goal came 10 minutes later off of a corner kick from the foot of freshman Jenna Schreiber, where Owsiany headed the ball in for Hope's third and final goal.

Junior Carley Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) put in Hope's first goal of the contest, in the 48th minute on a breakaway attempt for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

The Hope defense allowed no shots on goal during the 90-minute contest, and only four total shots to earn a third consecutive shutout, fifth of the season.

The Flying Dutch have a first round bye in the MIAA tournament as the No. 2 seed, and will host a semi-final on Tuesday, Oct. 31, against an opponent to be determined, and at a time to be determined.
