The third-ranked Hope College volleyball team started a busy weekend by splitting a pair of non-league matches against nationally-ranked opponents on Friday at North Park University.
The Flying Dutch defeated No. 7 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 28-26, 25-17, 25-21 before falling to No. 18 North Park 22-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-18.Â
Hope is now 22-2 on the season. On Saturday, Oct. 28, at 5 p.m., the Flying Dutch travel to eighth-ranked Calvin University for a rematch of The Rivalry. The match will not count toward the league standings.
Against Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Orange and Blue battled back after being down 19-9 in the first set. Hope pulled within one point at 22-21 and gained its first lead of the set at 25-24.Â
The Flying Dutch completed the comeback after tallying the final three points of the set.
Junior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) led with a match-high 18 kills and three aces. She also collected 13 digs.
Juniors Liz VanderSlice (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) and Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) each chipped in 11 and seven kills apiece.Â
Sophomore Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) totaled 39 assists against Wisconsin-Whitewater, while senior Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) had a match-high 14 digs.Â
Against North Park, Hope started strong, taking the first set over the hosts but could not overcome the momentum North Park had from taking down Wisconsin-Whitewater earlier in the day.Â
North Park (21-6) served 15 aces to Hope's two.
VanderWeide finished with a team-high 14 kills, while junior Brooke Fox (Saunemin, Illinois /Â Pontiac Township) and freshman Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) each had seven kills apiece.Â
Lee finished with 33 assists, a match-high, while junior Samantha Seib (Elkhorn, Wisconsin / Catholic Central) tied a match-high 18 digs for Hope.
