The Hope College men's soccer team fell in the MIAA Tournament quarterfinal game to The University of Olivet, 1-0, on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The loss likely ended the Flying Dutchmen's season. Heading into the week, Hope was ranked sixth in its region.
The Flying Dutchmen would need an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament when the field is announced on Monday, Nov. 6.
Olivet and Hope were deadlocked at zero up until the 76th minute of play when Braden Abbott put the Comets ahead after ripping a shot from outside of the box that banked in off the goal post for the go-ahead goal.
Throughout the game, Hope, which entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, held the pressure and controlled the game for most of the first and second halves before Olivet broke through with its second shot of the game during second-half play.
The Flying Dutchmen outshot the Comets 24-2 with seven of them being on target.
Junior AJ Boucher (Delton, Michigan / Gull Lake HS) and senior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) soared six and four shots, respectively, during the match for scoring opportunities through the 90 minutes of play.
Junior Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) made one save in net during the quarterfinal matchup.
