Women's Soccer Scores in the 75th Minute, Beats Kalamazoo

After not converting on two breakaways and seeing two shots hit the crossbar early, the Hope College women's soccer team welcomed a bit of good fortune late against Kalamazoo College.

A screened Carley Wagasky still found a cross from Ainsley Harris at her feet near the post and rolled it into the net for the game-winner in the 75th minute Wednesday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

With a 2-1 victory, the Flying Dutch remained tied atop the MIAA standings with a 2-0 league record and improved to 5-1-4 overall. Hope also set up a first-place showdown at Calvin University on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4:30 p.m.

The loss dropped third-place Kalamazoo to 1-1-1 in MIAA play and 4-3-4 overall.

The decisive score came after sophomore Liz Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston HS) found Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) sprinting up the right side of the field.

Harris took the ball down to near the goal line before sending it past a diving Kalamazoo keeper Elana Mitchell.

Senior Natalie Hammer (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) fell as she attempted to punch in the goal. Fortunately for Hope, Wagasky was right behind Hammer and tucked the ball inside the far post for her fourth goal of the season.

It was the team-leading fourth assist of the season for Harris, a sophomore.

"I was surprised Carley saw it when Nat fell to her knees," head coach Leigh Sears said. "By the grace of God, it went in. Either one of them could have scored."

The Flying Dutch led for 35 minutes after Hammer slammed a short cross from Wagasky into the net in the 32nd minute for the game's first goal and her second of the season.

Kalamazoo picked up possession and pressure coming out of halftime and evened the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute. Olivia DePauli converted a rebound for her second goal of the season.

Hope keeper Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) delivered in the clutch and kept the Hornets from pulling even again.

The freshman punched a Kalamazoo shot off the crossbar to keep the Flying Dutch in the lead. Feenstra made a similar save in the first half as well and finished with six saves.

Hope outshot Kalamazoo by a 23-15 margin, but the Hornets earned a 10-9 edge in shots after halftime.

Six of Mitchell's 10 saves for Kalamazoo came during the first half.
