Third-Ranked Volleyball Sweeps Adrian in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

It was an ideal postseason debut for the Hope College volleyball team.

The third-ranked Flying Dutch worked together nearly flawlessly en route to a 3-0 sweep of Adrian College in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The 25-15, 25-14, 25-12 victory propelled top-seeded Hope to the MIAA Tournament title match on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. against third-seeded Calvin University at DeVos Fieldhouse.

"I just thought it was a total team effort," head coach Becky Schmidt said after the Flying Dutch improved to 26-2 overall. "I thought our defense played really, really well tonight, both blocking and front row.

"I thought that facilitated Lauren Lee to be able to run an offense that found our middles, created isolation and put our hitters in great spots to be successful. It's how you'd want to script us playing well."

Hope's second win against Adrian in a week featured the Flying Dutch accumulating 44 kills to the Bulldogs' 22.

Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline HS) recorded a match-high 40 assists. Hope's two-time, All-MIAA First Team setter, set up seven different teammates for kills as the Flying Dutch hit .286 as a team.

Junior outside hitter Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded 14 kills with only one error in 34 attempts. Earlier in the day, VanderWeide was named as the MIAA's Most Valuable Player.

Junior outside hitter Liz VanderSlice (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) and freshman Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) chipped in eight kills apiece.

Junior middle blocker Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) contributed seven kills.

Hope hit .286 as a team, while Adrian (13-12) finished at .017. Amber Morris topped the Bulldogs with 10 kills.

The Flying Dutch collected 65 digs. VanderWeide and senior libero Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) had 15 digs apiece.

Hope is seeking its fifth MIAA Tournament title and the first since the spring of 2021. The Flying Dutch-Knights winner receives the league's automatic berth to next week's NCAA Division III Tournament. The loser will be a candidate for an at-large berth.

No. 11-ranked Calvin advanced by defeating second-seeded Albion College in four sets in Friday's first semifinal.
