Women's Soccer Edged on PKs in MIAA Tournament Title Game

The Hope College women's soccer team pushed Calvin University to the brink on Saturday and played the Knights to a 1-1 draw in the MIAA Tournament title game.

After 110 minutes of play, including overtime, a shootout decided which team received the MIAA Tournament trophy. Hope missed one of its chances and No. 17-ranked Knights converted all five of theirs to claim the prize.

Hope finished the season with a 10-2-6 overall record. The Flying Dutch were runner-up in the regular-season standings and the six-team MIAA Tournament.

Calvin (14-1-3) advanced to next week's NCAA Division III Championships with the MIAA's automatic bid.

Hope led the Knights for most of the second half.

Junior Carley Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven HS) buried a shot in the upper right corner of the net in the 57th minute.

The unassisted goal was Wagasky's ninth of the season.

Calvin picked up the attack after falling behind and recorded nine shots during the second half after totaling just four before halftime.

The Knights finally converted in the 82nd minute on Maggie Smith's fourth goal of the season following assists from Anna Reimink and Liz Wilson.

Calvin outshot Hope by a 6-3 margin during the two, 10-minute overtime periods.

Hope freshman Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) made two of her nine saves during overtime.

Calvin goalie Kalex Dodge also collected nine saves. During the shootout, Dodge stopped the Flying Dutch's third attempt.

Lucy Iverson's PK conversion on the Knights' fifth attempt ended the match.
