Baseball Downs Wabash, Falls to Otterbein on Opening Day

The Hope College baseball team split a pair of season-opening games on Saturday, bouncing back to defeat Wabash College (Ind.), 12-5, and losing to Otterbein University, 15-4.

The Flying Dutchmen's snapped Wabash's season-opening, four-game winning streak with a 12-hit attack.

Hope struck for six runs in the top of the first inning against Wabash. Senior Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) doubled home senior Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) to start the rally.

The Flying Dutchmen followed with RBI singles from senior Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center), junior Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), and junior Devin Meeuwsen and a two-run single from sophomore Al Money.

Bayn finished with a game-high four RBIs after going 3-for 5 with a second run-scoring double in the fifth and a RBI single in the eighth.

Winning pitcher Graham O'Gorman (Champaign, Illinois / Champaign Central) scattered five runs and five hits over six innings. O'Gorman (1-0) struck out seven and walked two in his first start of the season.

Reliever Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) fired three scoreless innings for his first save of the season.

Against Otterbein (2-0), Hope was outhit, 17-10, and allowed runs in six different innings.

Meeuwsen smacked an RBI triple. Cable and Money each had run-scoring singles.

Bayn was credited with an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Hope's next scheduled games are a three-game series at Franklin College (Ind.) on Friday-Saturday, March 3-4.
