Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. Franklin in Indiana

The Hope College baseball team split a wild doubleheader against Franklin College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen took Game 1 in extra innings, 14-12, after scoring five runs in the top of 10th. Franklin held on in Game 2, 5-4, after belting two runs, including a three-run blast in the bottom of the first.

Hope is now 2-2 on the season. Franklin is 4-2.

In Game 1, senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center HS) and junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) led a 12-hit Flying Dutchmen attack with three hits apiece.

The Flying Dutchmen combined to score 12 runs in their first and last innings at the plate.

Regan's two-run homer in the 10th closed the scoring for Hope. Senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) laced a two-run triple to start the rally and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep).

Franklin grabbed a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the eight. The Flying Dutch tied the score at 9-9 and forced extra innings in the top of the ninth when Pickett, a pinch-runner, and junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) both scored on wild pitches.

Junior Reece Crabtree (Reynoldsburg, Ohio / Reynoldsburg) earned the win in relief despite giving up a three-run homer in the 10th. He struck out three in 2 ? innings of relief.

In Game 2, Franklin outhit Hope, 7-4, and never trailed after charging out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Pickett scored in the eighth on a two-out, RBI groundout by freshman left fielder Ben Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic. The Flying Dutchmen stranded the tying run at second base.

Hope next is headed to a three-game set hosted on Friday-Saturday, March 10-11, by Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

The Flying Dutchmen are scheduled to play Hanover College (Ind.) on Friday at 3 p.m, Millikin on Saturday at 11 a.m., and Hanover on Saturday again at 2 p.m.
