Men's Lacrosse Stung by Late Elmhurst Rally in Season Opener

The Hope College men's lacrosse team had a season-opening victory snatched away on Saturday.

Elmhurst University (Ill.) rallied for a 12-11 victory on a chilly Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium by scoring three unanswered goals, including two during the final 30 seconds.

The Bluejays' Eli Spence muscled in the game-tying goal with 30 seconds remaining and the game-winning goal 18 seconds later. Spence finished with a team-high five goals.

Sophomore Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) topped the Flying Dutchmen with six goals and one assist for seven points.

Freshman Andon Rieger (Elmhurst, Illinois / York) added two goals for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen trailed, 6-3, at halftime, but erupted for five third-quarter goals while keeping Elmhurst (20) off the board.

Hope twice took a two-goal lead during the fourth quarter, including for the final time with 6:24 at 11-9 on Bowen's final goal off an assist from junior Jack Cervantes (Canton, Michigan / Canton).

Spencer set up Elmhurst teammate Sante Dybowski for a goal with 2:15 remaining to cut Hope's lead to 11-10.

After Spencer evened the score at 11-11, Elmhurst won the face off and set up Spencer to strike again.

Elmhurst goalie Noah Mickelson made 18 saves.

Hope's John Shea (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) had 11.

Hope's next game is Wednesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. vs. Aurora University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
