2023 Men's Tennis Season Preview

The Hope College Flying Dutchmen tennis team is relying on experienced senior core heading into the 2023 spring season.

In 2022, Hope finished as the MIAA regular-season and tournament runner-up. The Flying Dutch went 6-1 in MIAA matches and 8-13 overall.

The large number of returners for the Flying Dutchmen is promising, head coach Austin Hunt says..

"We have four seniors that come back this year who played No. 1 through 4 singles for us last year. Jacob Burkett, Cameron Coates, Tyler Stafford and Matt Henkel should all have a great senior year," Hunt said.

2023 Schedule

Hope takes on a tough non-conference schedule of 11 matches, beginning with a home match against Cornerstone University on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 5 p.m. The Flying Dutchmen match up against five different regionally ranked opponents, including Case Western Reserve who is the No. 2 team in the nation currently. The Flying Dutchmen begin MIAA play on Saturday, March 25, at 4 p.m. on the road at Adrian College. The MIAA Championship Tournament begins on April 27.

Hope also returns one second team All-MIAA selection in senior business major Tyler Stafford (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

By the Numbers

2 — All-MIAA First Team honors for Flying Dutchmen teammates Jacob Burkett and Cameron Coates.

4 — Consecutive seasons Hope has finished runner-up in the MIAA regular-season standings.

25 — Consecutive completed seasons the Flying Dutchmen have received at least one All-MIAA First Team honoree.

314 — Match wins for Hope against MIAA opponents all-time. The Flying Dutchmen have a .632 winning percentage in league play in 497 matches.

Coach's Outlook

"The men's team's biggest strength is that last year we graduated just one senior, and we returned our entire starting lineup. Our veteran experience that they're able to bring into this year will help out our younger players to grow and learn. Both the returners and the newcomers have such great coachability and their willingness to learn is great." - Austin Hunt
