Baseball Homers Twice, Loses to Hanover (Ind.)

Right fielder Kainan Bayn and catcher Caleb Regan both homered for the Hope College baseball team during a 14-4 loss to Hanover College (Ind.) on Friday in Decatur, Illinois.

The non-league game was the first of three this weekend at Millikin University. On Saturday, March 11, the Flying Dutchmen face Millikin at 11 a.m. Central and Hanover at 2 p.m. Central.

Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East HS) and Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) — both seniors — slugged solo homers in the top of the third and fifth innings, respectively.

It was Regan's second home of the season for Hope (2-3) and the seventh of his career. It was Bayn's first home run of the second and the fourth of his career.

Hope added two runs in the sixth.

Senior Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) smacked a one-out RBI double down the right-field line to knock home junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian).

Two batters later, senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) singled in Gardner with two outs.

Hanover (3-4) grabbed an early 4-0 lead with a four-run second and broke open the game with a seven-run fourth.

Hanover outhit Hope by a 14-6 margin. Winning pitcher Matthew Alter scattered six hits and four runs over six innings.

Bayn and Gardner shared team-high honors for the Flying Dutchmen with two hits apiece.
