Sophomore shortstop Logan McCoy delivered an RBI double, and senior catcher Caleb Regan added an RBI and a run scored for the Hope College baseball team in a 4-3 loss to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday in Davenport, Florida.
The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 4-7 on the season after being unable to preserve a three-run lead after seven innings.
Hope grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the second inning and a two-run fifth.
In the second, senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center HS) scored from third when La Crosse (5-2) misplayed a one-out grounder off the bat of senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).
Gardner, who was credited with an RBI, later stole second, but Hope stranded runners at second and third.
In the fifth, McCoy (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) doubled home designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville). One batter later, Regan singled in senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) from third.
McCoy, a sophomore shortstop, was later stranded at third after La Crosse retired the final two Hope batters of the inning.
La Crosse pulled even with a three-run eighth, starting a rally with three singles in four at-bats. A Gardner throwing error from second allowed a second run to cross home plate.
A two-out wild pitch from sophomore reliever
Branden Rosenfeld (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) tied the score.
In the ninth, La Crosse's first batter, Tim Urlaub, reached base on an error by third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland).
After a sacrifice bunt and a flyout, Jack Olver knocked in Urlaub with a walk-off single off Rosenfeld.
Hope's next game is Tuesday, March 21, at 3:45 p.m. against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Davenport, Florida.Â
