Shane Hykin Pitches Baseball to Split at Wheaton (Ill.)

The Hope College baseball team went extra innings in pursuit of a sweep of Wheaton College (Ill.) on Friday. The Flying Dutchmen played nearly the equivalent of a third seven-inning game, too.

Hope settled for a split, taking Game 1, 6-1, but losing Game 2, 6-5, in 15 innings. The two teams were scheduled to play two seven-inning games after weather forced the cancellation of games on Saturday, March 25.

Both Hope and Wheaton are now 7-8 on the season.

In Game 1, senior Shane Hykin delivered his best start of the season on the mound. The right-handed pitcher from Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Northern HS) struck out 11 and yielded one run over 6 2/3 innings.

Hykin, who improved his record to 2-0, yielded six hits and three walks.

The Flying Dutchmen collected only five hits but still made the most of early scoring opportunities.

Hope used a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) in the first inning and bases-loaded walks to senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and junior left fielder Zach Lorentsen (Wheaton, Illinois / Wheaton North) to take a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) extended the lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.

After Wheaton scored in the fifth, the Flying Dutchmen tacked on two seventh-inning runs on a Stuursma RBI single and a Gardner RBI double.

In Game 2, the teams traded eight, scoreless extra innings before Wheaton catcher Tyler Weiner delivered a one-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the 15th.

Hope rallied to tie the score at 5-5 with runs in the fifth and sixth innings after Wheaton grabbed a 5-3 lead with a four-run fourth. Junior first basemen Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Dylan Kleinedler (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Stevenson) plated the tying run in the fifth on a single to right.

Designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) topped the Flying Dutchmen with three hits, including an RBI single during a three-run third.

Junior catcher Andrew Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit) had an RBI double for Hope. Stuursma earned an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Hope's next game is Tuesday, March 28, at 4 p.m. against Manchester College (Ind.) at Boeve Stadium. It is the home opener for the Flying Dutchmen.
