Women's Lacrosse Edged in High-Scoring Game at Oberlin

The Hope College women's lacrosse team had its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at Oberlin College. The Yeowomen topped the Flying Dutch, 22-19.

Hope jumped out to a 2-0 lead in under two minutes into gameplay with junior Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland HS) and Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) finding open net with just nine seconds separating their goals.

Oberlin had a response with two goals of their own before the halfway point of the first quarter.

A flurry of goals from Hope including two from sophomore Juli Kirkpatrick helped Hope to a 7-5 lead after the first quarter.

After Hope went up 13-11 at the half, Oberlin notched 11 of the second half's 17 goals to collect the win.

Both Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn) and freshman Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) topped Hope in goals with four.

Kirkpatrick added on an assist to finish with a five-point game, while Brown tallied two assists to grab a team-high six points.

Salazar, Randall and junior Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) each scored three goals for Hope in the second game of the season, while Mia Skibins (Granger, Indiana / Penn) and Randall picked up a team-high three ground balls each.

Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) and Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) saw time in net for Hope, with Yakes grabbing eight saves and Smith one save.

Hope's returns to Van Andel Soccer Stadium for the home opener on Tuesday, March 7, at 4 p.m. as the Flying Dutch host Aurora University (Ill.).
