2023 HOPEYs Nominees: Female Be Strong. Be True. Athlete of the Year

Presented to a junior or senior who demonstrates the true essence of being a student-athlete and embodies the Division III motto of Discover, Develop, Dedicate.  This student-athlete is in high academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.5), plays a significant role on the team, and is involved in the Hope and Holland community. 

NOTE: The annual HOPEYs celebration of Hope College Athletics will be held on Monday, April 17, at 7 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse. The event is open to the public. Admission is free.


Delaney Kirinovic, Women's Lacrosse

Kirinovic is a senior majoring in Public Accounting and Business. She has been a three year captain for the Flying Dutch and earned All-MIAA First Team honors in 2022. As a defender, she caused five turnovers and scooped up 12 ground balls during seven MIAA games. Kirinovic works on campus as a TA for Business Computing and serves as an Economics tutor through the Academic Success Center. She is also a CFL Student Consultant. Additionally, Kirinovic is a Dance Marathon Fundraising Committee Member and Hamilton Young Life Leader. She has spent the past two summers as an audit intern with Maner Costerisan and will work there as an Audit Associate after graduation. 

Jenna Mustapha, Women's Soccer

As a junior Chemistry major, Mustapha has been a two-time captain for the Flying Dutch. She claimed her third All-MIAA First Team honor this season and was named All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches for the second time in her career. After suffering an injury late in the 2021 season, Mustapha returned to play in 13 games and made 11 starts on defense for Hope. She helped Hope hold opponents to 15 goals in 17 games. Mustapha serves on campus as an organic chemistry TA, is a Team 43 representative and is involved in Dance Marathon as the women's soccer team captain. In the Holland community, she has volunteered with Camp Sunshine, Benjamin's Hope, Holland Hospital and works as a Patient Care advocate. 

Delaney Wesolek, Women's Swim & Dive

Wesolek is a junior Nursing major and balances the demands of being a student and athlete. As a captain she helped lead the Flying Dutch to a third consecutive MIAA Championship in the pool. Wesolek was a member of the 400-yard Freestyle Relay that qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships and earned All-American Second Team Honors. On campus, Wesolek is actively involved in Dance Marathon and team Bible studies. She is also a campus leader for Team 43. In the community, she is an ambassador for 'Be Better', a foundation that positively impacts mental health resources for student-athletes. Wesolek has also volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Holland and Freedom Village. 

Ella McKinney, Women's Basketball

McKinney is a senior Biology major. She started all 29 games for the Flying Dutch this season and earned All-MIAA Second Team honors after averaging 10.9 points per league game. In 2022, McKinney was a member of the NCAA Divison III National Championship team and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Final Four. McKinney is involved with Campus Ministries as a Bible study leader and also serves as a leader for Team 43. She traveled to Uganda in the summer of 2022 with the SEED program. Off campus, McKinney volunteers with the Holland Free Health Clinic.
