2023 HOPEYs Nominees: Male Be Strong. Be True. Athlete of the Year

Presented to a junior or senior who demonstrates the true essence of being a student-athlete and embodies the Division III motto of Discover, Develop, Dedicate.  This student-athlete is in high academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.5), plays a significant role on the team, and is involved in the Hope and Holland community. 

NOTE: The annual HOPEYs celebration of Hope College Athletics will be held on Monday, April 17, at 7 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse. The event is open to the public. Admission is free.


Seth Almquist, Men's Golf

Almquist is a senior Environmental Geochemistry major. He is a four-year letter winner and has served as team captain for the Flying Dutchmen for two years. Almquist received All-MIAA First Team honors this past fall and helped the team to an MIAA Championship. In 2022, he was named to the All-MIAA Second Team. On campus, Almquist has been actively involved in research with the Geology/Environmental Science and Biology departments. He also serves as Vice President of the Geology & Earth Sciences Honor Society (Sigma Gamma Epsilon). Almquist traveled to Zambia with the SEED program in 2022 and has served on the Athletic Ministries Leadership Team for the past two years. He is also a Goldwater Scholar and had the opportunity to serve as a Research Assistant at Charles University in Prague, Czechia last summer. 

Brady Swinehart, Men's Basketball

As a senior Public Accounting major, Swinehart was also a captain for the Flying Dutchmen and is known for pouring into the lives of his teammates and those around him. His leadership played a key role in the end of season run where Hope won the MIAA Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Swinehart is actively involved in the Athletics Ministries Team and has been a consistent member of the Hope Athletics Event Staff. Additionally, he has served as an Accounting Tutor, Hopeys Committee member and Dance Marathon Captain. In the summer of 2022, Swinehart traveled to the Dominican Republic with the SEED Program. 

Michael Mann, Men's Lacrosse

Mann is a junior Public Accounting major and has started every game for the Flying Dutchmen in his career. He is a captain on the team and serves as a recruit liaison. In 2022, he shared the lead for most points scored on the team with 50 goals and 40 assists. He also ranked second in the MIAA with 15 assists and tied for third with 20 goals during six league games as an attacker. Mann was named to the All-MIAA First Team and was an All-Region selection last year. On campus, Mann works as an admissions tour guide and is involved with ACT/SAAC. He is also trained in OneLove peer intervention to advocate for life-changing conversations about healthy and unhealthy relationships. 

Dan Romano, Football

Romano is a senior Biomedical-Mechanical Engineering major with a minor in mathematics. As a running back for the Flying Dutchmen he is a two-year starter and earned All-MIAA second team honors in 2021. Romano is a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's Campbell Trophy which recognizes a college football student-athlete for his academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. On campus, he is a member of ACT/SAAC and represents Hope with the MIAA SAAC. Romano participated in a SEED trip in 2021 and currently serves as a co-leader of the football Bible study.
