Baseball Homers Twice, Tops Olivet in Series Opener

Spencer Cable sent the game's first pitch over the right-center field fence. A few innings later, Kainan Bayn homered himself — for the third consecutive game — and the Hope College baseball team was on its way to a 13-2 victory at Olivet College on Friday.

The Flying Dutchmen (12-13, 5-4 MIAA) return home on Saturday, April 15, at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Boeve Stadium eyeing a series sweep.

Cable's first home run of the season sparked a two-run first for Hope. The senior from Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) later added RBIs on an eighth-inning groundout and a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.

Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) stretched the Flying Dutchmen's lead to 5-0 with a three-run, opposite-field blast to right-center in the fifth.

The senior right fielder now has a career-high four home runs on the season. Bayn finished with two hits and four RBIs after a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Hope collected seven hits from seven different players. The Flying Dutchmen capitalized on 11 walks and four errors from the Comets.

Bayn, junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) each scored two times apiece.

Winning pitcher Shane Hykin (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) improved to 4-0 on the season.

The senior right-hander scattered five hits and one run over six innings. Hykin struck out five and walked two against Olivet (3-20, 1-8 MIAA).
