Baseball Goes on Scoring Tear for Doubleheader Sweep of Olivet

Owen Krizan, Andrew Pickett and Brenden Collins all belted home runs to power the Hope College baseball team to 21-5 and 11-0 victories against Olivet College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen swept the three-game series to remain in a third-place tie with Adrian College in the MIAA standings. Both games on Saturday were called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Hope and Adrian are 7-4 in league play, one game behind second-place Alma College and three behind first-place Kalamazoo College. The Flying Dutchmen (14-13 overall) play at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, April 18, at 4 p.m. in the series finale.

The Flying Dutchmen have scored double-digit runs in five of their past six games and are 4-1 when doing so. On Friday, Hope won 13-2 at Olivet in the series opener.

"We think we have a pretty talented offensive club. We just haven't put all three phases of the game together," head coach Stu Fritz said. "I think [Olivet coach Santiago Mendez] is doing a great job with a young team over there. Hopefully, this got us on track. We had really good at-bats yesterday especially down there. We lined up seven or eight times against their top arm. I just hope it gains some momentum for us."

In Game 1, Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) smacked his second home run of the season in the bottom of the first — a two-run blast that fueled a four-run rally after Olivet jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Olivet struck again in the second for two runs, but Hope responded with a seven-run second and a five-run third.

Krizan tied the score at 5-5 on an RBI single, then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. The junior first baseman went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead a 11-hit Flying Dutchmen attack.

Pickett (Carmel, Indiana / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) capped Hope's scoring with a sixth-inning grand slam over the center-field fence — the junior catcher's first career home run.

The Flying Dutchmen capitalized on four Olivet pitchers combining to hit nine batters and walk eight more. Junior shortstop Devin Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) finished with a team-best four runs scored.

Starting pitcher Graham O'Gorman (Champaign, Illinois / Champaign Central) overcame a rough start to raise his record to 5-1. The junior right-hander scattered seven hits and five runs over five innings of work.

In Game 2, Krizan picked up where he left off against the Comets (3-22, 1-10 MIAA) by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Krizan ripped a two-run single to right in the first and later scored on an Olivet throwing error.

Senior designated hitter Spencer Cable (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) pulled a two-run double to right in the second and added an RBI double in the fifth.

Senior right fielder Kainan Bayn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.

Collins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Hackett Catholic) crushed a solo homer in the fifth — the freshman's first for the Flying Dutchmen.

Winning pitcher Mason Belmore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) went the distance to even his record at 1-1. The sophomore right-hander allowed only two hits while walking three and striking out three.
