Baseball Falls at Kalamazoo in Series Finale

The Hope College baseball team rallied twice before falling at Kalamazoo College, 9-7, on Tuesday in the series finale.

Two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning and a sacrifice fly in the eighth brought the Flying Dutchmen within a run, but the Hornets held on.

The end of Hope's three-game winning streak dropped the Flying Dutchmen to 14-14 overall and 7-5 in MIAA play.

Hope's next game is Thursday, April 20, at 4 p.m. at Albion College. The Flying Dutchmen will host the final two games of the series on Friday, April 21, at 1 p.m.

Junior center fielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids HS) led Hope going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a two-run triple in the third that tied the score at 3-3.

Kalamazoo (23-6, 11-1 MIAA) outhit the Flying Dutchmen, 10-7, and chased starter Trent Johnson in the fourth.

The Hornets answered a sacrifice fly from senior catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) in the fourth with a three-run rally of their own. Hunter Posezat's two-run single put Kalamazoo ahead for good at 5-4.

A run in the fourth and two more in the fifth extended the Hornets' lead to 8-4.

The Flying Dutchmen chipped away at the deficit in the seventh when junior first baseman Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and senior second baseman Nolan Gardner (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) each recorded RBI groundouts.

Sophomore third baseman Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) knocked in Regan in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to cut Hope's deficit to 8-7. Regan led off the inning with a triple.

In Kalamazoo's at-bat, David Stechow added an insurance run with a sacrifice bunt. The Hornets then retired three of the four Hope batters they faced in the ninth. Kalamazoo won all three games of the series by a total of four runs.
