Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Alan Babbitt

Women's Lacrosse Powers Past Adrian, Clinches Share of First MIAA Title

With a historic opportunity on their lacrosse sticks, the Flying Dutch wasted no time in shifting their offense into high gear.

The Hope College women's lacrosse team scored three times in the first minute and powered its way to a 17-3 victory against visiting Adrian College on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutch clinched a share of the first league title in program history as well as the No. 1 seed in next week's MIAA Tournament.

Hope (9-5, 6-0 MIAA) can earn an outright regular-season championship on Saturday, April 29, at 1 p.m. when the Flying Dutch host Kalamazoo College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

"Our fast break sometimes is unstoppable. That's exactly what it was for the first minute," head coach Keagan Pontious said. "We see the openings and take the risks. We've been feeding that the entire season. Now we're capitalizing on it."

Sophomore midfielder Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn HS) opened the scoring 24 seconds into the game after freshman Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) won the draw control.

Junior attacker Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland) struck 22 seconds later after freshman Caroline Curnutt (Fishers, Indiana / Heritage Christian) secured the draw control.

Just 14 seconds later, Salazar scored again on a free-position attempt after a Randall draw control win.

The Flying Dutch went on to add five more goals before the first quarter ended.

"We've been consistent with the great thing we're doing," Pontious said. "We constantly talk about making each other look good. We had nine different players score today."

Three goals apiece for Salazar and sophomore attacker Ruthie Anderson (Lowell, Michigan / Lowell) led Hope's balanced attack.

Curnutt, Kirkpatrick, junior midfielder Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) and freshman midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) chipped in two goals apiece.

The Flying Dutch also received one goal apiece from Randall, freshman attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) and freshman attacker Alyssa Segura (Naples, Florida / Barron Collier).

Defensively, Hope recorded a season-best effort with three goals allowed to Adrian (5-9, 0-6).

Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) made 10 saves for the Flying Dutch.
