Softball Ties and Loses at University of Chicago

The Hope College softball team rallied to tie the University of Chicago in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Friday and avoid a sweep.

The Flying Dutch scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to even the score at 4-4. The game went into extra innings and was called a tie after the 10th inning could not be completed due to darkness.

Host Chicago won Game 1, 8-0, in five innings. The Flying Dutch are now 12-8-1 on the season.

Hope trailed 4-2 in Game 1 after Chicago (9-4-1) answered a two-run Flying Dutch fifth with a three-run rally.

In the fifth, the Flying Dutch loaded the bases with nobody out. Freshman center fielder Kennedi Pochmara (Clinton Township, Michigan / Chippewa Valley) then drew a bases-loaded walk. Junior third baseman Emily Martin (Whitehall, Michigan / Whitehall) followed with a sacrifice fly, but Chicago recorded the final two outs by throwing a runner attempting to steal second and a flyout.

Catcher Julia Folkl capped Chicago's rally with a two-out, two-run single, but was thrown out attempting to advance to second base on a throw from sophomore left fielder Lexie DeHoop (Hudsonville, Michigan / Unity Christian) to senior second baseman Cayley Ebeling (Shelby Township, Michigan / Utica).

In the sixth, junior shortstop Grace Henry (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) and senior catcher Haley Bennett (Livonia, Michigan / Benjamin Franklin) both reached base with singles to put runners at first and third with one out.

After Henry stole home on a double steal with pinch-runner Kate DeMann (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian), junior Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser) singled home DeMann with two outs to tie the score at 4-all.

In the ninth, junior reliever Samantha Vermeesch (Ithaca, Michigan / Ithaca) preserved a tie score by stranding Chicago third baseman Alina Yazek at second after a leadoff double by retiring three of the next four batters she faced.

Chicago Game 1 starting pitcher Paige Heffke fired a one-hit, five-inning shutout. Heffke faced only 17 batters and issued a first-inning single to junior designated player Kyra Acker (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) and a third-inning walk to Acker. Heffke struck out five.

Designated player Paige Zvokel led a 12-hit Chicago attack with three hits, including a two-run, third-inning double.

Hope returns to action on Friday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at home with a non-league doubleheader against Anderson University (Ind.) at Wolters Stadium.
