In a dominant showing, the Hope College Flying Dutch swept the Anderson University (Ind.) softball team in a double-header, winning game one 6-2 and game two 9-1 in just five innings on Friday.
Hope improved to 14-8-1 overall this season.
The Flying Dutch got off to a strong start in game one at Wolters Stadium, with a four-run surge in the bottom of the second inning.
Three singles to left field in a row brought in the runs, giving Hope a comfortable lead early on.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Haley Bennett (Livonia, Michigan / Fraser HS) gained an infield single, and senior Lexi Potapczak (Naperville, Illinois / Benet Academy) hit a double to left-center field, sending in pinch runner sophomore Mady Pahl (Beaverton, Michigan / Beaverton) for two more runs.
Although Anderson managed to score two runs in the top of the seventh, it was too late to turn the tide, and Hope emerged victorious.
Sophomore Grace Connelly picked up the win for Hope, staying in the circle for five innings, throwing three strikeouts and allowing just three hits. Connelly (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville) improved to 8-4 this season.
The 16 total hits for the Hope were led by Zombo with three hits in three at-bats, and Henry also with three hits.
In game two, the Flying Dutch continued their impressive performance with a strong offensive showing.
Hope scored two runs in the bottom of both the first and second innings, taking a commanding 4-0 lead early on.
In the bottom of the third inning, junior Sydney Zombo (Clinton Township, Michigan / Fraser) hit a bases-clearing double for three RBIs, followed by a sacrifice fly ball by junior Kyra Acker (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) that sent freshman Kennedi Pochmara (Clinton Township, Michigan / Chippewa Valley) home to score Hope's eighth run of the game.
Senior Emily Martin (Whitehall, Michigan / Whitehall) singled down the right field line for an RBI to end the game in the bottom of the fifth with a final score of 9-1.
Junior Alaina Adams (Oak Creek, Wisconsin / St. Thomas More) gained the win in the shortened game, improving to 7-6 overall. Adams slung three strikeouts in her 13th starting appearance for the Flying Dutch.
