Men's Tennis Shows Aggressiveness In Takedown Of Trine

A fourth consecutive victory has the Hope College men's tennis team still unbeaten in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutchmen remain as one of two remaining undefeated teams in MIAA league play along with Kalamazoo College after an 8-1 win over Trine University at the VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts on Friday.

"When we play those tougher non-league matches, it forces you to play aggressive," said head coach Austin Hunt. "Sometimes you can't out-rally better opponents, and having to constantly push on the aggressive side helps them take that to those league opponents."

Hope quickly took over the match play by sweeping all three doubles matches.

Both senior Jacob Burkett (Clarkston, Michigan / Clarkston HS) and senior Cameron Coates (Stevensville, Michigan / Laurel Springs) at No. 1 doubles and senior Matt Henkel  (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and senior Tyler Stafford (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) at No. 2 doubles each snagged their wins 8-2 over Trine.

The No. 3 doubles pairing of juniors John Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio / St. Xavier) and Justin Fay (Naperville, Illinois / St. Francis) defeated their counterpart, 8-3.

Burkett earned his win at No. 1 singles with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

Hope swept flights 3-6 en route to its sixth overall victory of the season.

Coates topped his opponent 6-2 and 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

No. 4 singles win came from Henkel with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

Fay snagged the win for Hope at No. 5 singles after scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Sophomore Austin Becksvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) finished the scoring for the Flying Dutchmen with a No. 6 singles win over Trine, 6-3 and 6-1.

Hope faces off with Albion College for another league play matchup on Saturday, April 8, at 11 a.m. at the VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.
