Men's Lacrosse is All Good with Alex Goodall, Tops Adrian In MIAA Semifinals

The senior scores a career-high six goals in victory on Wednesday.

Alex Goodall's perseverance paid off in a rewarding way for him and the Hope College men's lacrosse team.

The senior attacker scored a career-high six goals to lead the Flying Dutchmen in a 16-7 victory against third-seeded Adrian College in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Second-seeded Hope (12-5 overall) advanced to play at top-seeded Albion College in the championship game on Saturday, May 6, at 7 p.m.

It is the Flying Dutchmen's fifth consecutive title game appearance. Hope is seeking a third MIAA Tournament title in team history.

Head coach Michael Schanhals said it was satisfying to see Goodall deliver in a big moment for the Flying Dutchmen.

Goodall (Clarkston, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest HS) recorded his sixth consecutive multi-goal game. Earlier in the season, he missed seven games due to injury.

"The amount of, what a normal person would call suffering, on a daily basis and the amount of time he spends with Tonia (Gruppen) in the training room is incredible. Wow, is that one tough kid," Schanhals said. "To have this game at home, a senior, his last home game, and ball out like that, is special."

Goodall raised his season total to a career-high 19 goals.

The civil engineering major scored twice during the first quarter to help Hope jump out to a 5-1 lead.

"He creates space for us," Schanhals said of Goodall. "Defenders don't want to leave him, so they can't help. Like a post player in basketball where he Is the hub, it's very similar to Goodie. With his ability to find space, and get to the back side, he makes it easier for his teammates. Michael Mann had some seeing-eye passes to find Alex and his rocket-pop stick. It was fun to watch him."

Goodall topped a group of five Flying Dutchmen goal-scorers.

Sophomore attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) chipped in four goals and one assist.

Sophomore midfielder Nick McCreery (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) added three goals.

Junior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit) collected two goals and a game-high four assists.

Junior midfielder Marco Mularoni (Brighton, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) scored once.

Senior attacker Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) matched his season-high with six assists, which is one off the Flying Dutchmen's stadium record.

Defensively, senior goalkeeper John Shea (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made 12 saves for the Flying Dutchmen and freshman defender John Foster (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) recorded a team-high three of Hope's 11 caused turnovers.

Shea played through a long, low shot that he saved with his shins during the second half.

"Another senior. He's been through it, too. It's a hard life being a goalie," Schanhals said. "He's done a remarkable job. He stepped up big time tonight. He had a couple of passes in the clearing game tonight, which were gorgeous. He's worked hard to make that happen. Just to be comfortable enough to make that happen under pressure in a moment, creating opportunities for us, is big. When we get out on a break like that, it gets really fun."
