Sixth-Ranked Volleyball Downs St. Olaf in Season Debut

The sixth-ranked Hope College volleyball team dominated early, then used a little grit to spike St. Olaf College in the season opener on Friday in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Flying Dutch earned a 25-6, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory at the Washington University in St. Louis Bear Invitational.

The match was tied eight times during the third set and 12 times during the fourth set.

Outside hitter Addie VanderWeide recorded a match-high 14 kills in her Hope debut.

The junior transfer from the University of Iowa and Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) slammed three kills to help Hope jump out to a 10-0 lead in the first set.

VanderWeide also finished with 14 digs, second to teammate Brooke Fox's 15.

Fox (Saunemin, Illinois / Pontiac Township) also served a match-high five aces.

Hope finished with 13 service aces to St. Olaf's 3.

The Flying Dutch also received nine kills from junior middle blocker Liz VanderSlice (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville).

Junior middle blocker Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) collected seven kills and a match-high four blocks.

Sophomore setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Ann Arbor Skyline) totaled a match-high 37 assists and chipped in nine digs.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, Hope will face two ranked teams to close out the two-day tournament: No. 23 Otterbein University (Ohio) at 10:30 a.m. Central and No. 14 WashU at 2:30 p.m. Central.
