Men's Soccer Nets Seven Goals in Victory vs. Eureka

It was no eureka moment for the Hope College's men's soccer team, but rather a satisfying high-scoring one.

Facing a new opponent, the Flying Dutchmen charged to a 7-1 non-league victory against Eureka College on Wednesday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium and stretched their winning streak to four games.

The contest was Hope's highest-scoring game since a 7-0 victory against Heidelberg University (Ohio) on Sept. 24, 2022.

The win streak is the Flying Dutchmen's longest since claiming five in a row midway through the 2021 season.

Hope (5-1-2 overall) took the lead 5 ½ minutes after the opening kickoff and never trailed.

Freshman Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central HS) put the Flying Dutchmen on the board behind an assist from junior Thomas De Vries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian). It was Weigel's first collegiate goal.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Weigel returned the favor by setting up De Vries for his team-leading third goal of the season.

In the 35th minute, sophomore Reece Brown recorded the first of his two goals for the game off an assist from freshman Josh Reyes (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Oakland Christian).

After Hope yielded an own goal off an errant clearing attempt in the 36th minute, sophomore captain Cole Pauly (Mundelein, Illinois / Mundelein) answered with his second goal of the season behind an assist from junior Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy).

In the second half, Hope received goals from senior Griffin Brown (Livonia, Michigan / Livonia Stevenson) on a penalty kick in the 56th minute, senior O'lee Olsen (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia) in the 68th minute off an assist from junior Ben Bush (Spring Lake, Michigan / Spring Lake) and Reece Brown in the 86th minute.

Eureka fell to 2-3-2 on the season.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Sept. 23, at noon at Wabash College (Ind.).
