Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Men's Soccer Plays through Lightning Delays, Earns Tie at DePauw

The Hope College men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw at DePauw University (Ind.) on Tuesday.

After a 4 hour, 15-minute bus ride, the Flying Dutchmen played through challenging weather conditions and a physical opponent to extend their unbeaten streak to six games.

Hope had won its previous five games and is now 6-1-3 on the season.

"Coming off a long bus ride and multiple lightning delays. I was very happy with our guys' maturity and drive regardless of the circumstances," head coach David Blahnik said. "I feel very good about where we are as a team going into league play next week."

The Flying Dutchmen outshot DePauw by a 14-7 margin. Eight of those shots came during the second half.

Goalkeeper Sam Ortman made six saves for DePauw (4-3-1), which drew five yellow cards to Hope's one.

Ortman made three saves in each half.

"We are frustrated to not get the win and I felt that our boys were deserving of it. Unfortunately, sometimes that is soccer," Blahnik said. "We were moving the ball well and created a lot of opportunities. Their goalkeeper played a phenomenal game."

Senior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) topped Hope with five shots.

Junior Thomas De Vries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) finished with four shots.

The Flying Dutchmen received two saves from junior goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community).

Hope kicks off MIAA play on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. against Adrian College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen's six wins this season are second-most by an MIAA team this season.
