Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brayden Freidhoff

Super Mario Hrvojevic Powers Men's Soccer Past Cornerstone

Midfielder Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy) starred as the Hope College men's soccer team defeated Cornerstone University 4-2 Thursday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The junior recorded his first collegiate multi-goal game and added two assists to help the Flying Dutchmen earn their first victory of the season after ties in their first two matches.

After consecutive scoreless draws last weekend, Hope was raring to get in on some goal-scoring action.

Hrvojevic did not make the Flying Dutchmen wait long to get on the board.

In the 18th minute, Hrvojevic scored his first goal of the night on a cross from senior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern).

Three minutes later, Cornerstone (1-2-2) quickly drew even with a penalty kick conversion from sophomore Tyler Corstange.

Hrvojevic put Hope back in front before the half by converting his penalty kick in the 44th minute, then turned to assists.

Hrvojevic assisted on both second-half goals. The Flying Dutchmen added to their lead thanks to goals in the 51st minute from sophomore Cole Pauly (Mundelein, Illinois / Mundelein) and in the 62nd minute from Jansen.

It was Hrvojevic's second career multiple-assist game.

Cornerstone cut Hope's lead to 4-2 in the 67th minute on Seth Campbell's goal.

Junior goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) kept Cornerstone from getting any closer and finished with four saves.

Hope will play on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. Central at Elmhurst University (Ill.). This will be the teams' first meeting since a 2-1 Hope victory in 2014.
